Medical/Scientific Writing:  What I will do for you . . .

• I will work with you to create a polished document starting from your data output.  The ideas, insights, and conclusions presented in the final product will be all your own – but I can help you organize, focus, and polish your prose (and tables/figures) so that your ideas shine and are clearly understood by your target readers.

  Types of projects: Manuscripts for scientific/medical journals, pharmaceutical regulatory documents, scientific poster presentations, PowerPoint presentations, grants/proposals, web site content, product monographs, educational materials.

  Rates for medical/scientific writing:  Click here to see my current average hourly rate.  Please note that my rate is negotiable for some types of projects (eg, projects with flexible schedules, some long-term projects, projects for non-profit clients).  Note: the rate is 10% higher for “rush” projects (projects requiring >40 hours per week).

  For a typical manuscript (ie, up to 50 references cited, up to 10 tables/figures) describing a medical or scientific study:  I will work from your source materials (eg, study plan, statistical results, and list of publication references) to complete a draft plus 1 major revision in ~3 weeks of work time (110-140 hours).  I can also prepare figures (DeltaGraph) and do some basic statistical analyses (JMP, SAS) upon request.

  For a typical clinical study report (ie, non-pivotal study, text and in-text tables): I will work from your source materials (eg, protocol, Tables/Listings/Graphs, and report template) to complete a draft plus 1 major revision in ~3 weeks of work time (110-140 hours).  I can also assist in assembling appendices upon request.

  For other types of projects, I can give you an estimated number of hours once you describe the scope of your project, source materials, and schedule.  In some cases, it would be helpful for me to review your source materials.

Copyediting:  What I will check for you . . .

• Spelling.
  
• Punctuation.
  
• Sentence grammar (eg, subject-verb agreement).
  
• Appropriateness of word usage (eg, “due to” vs. “because of,” “compared to” vs. “compared with,” etc).
  
• Consistency of format (eg, format of titles and subtitles, tables, figures).
  
• Adherence to chosen style guidelines (eg, AMA, Chicago).
  
• Accuracy of common abbreviations and acronyms.
  
• Correspondence between citations in text and list of references.
  
• Correspondence between numbers presented in text and those presented in tables.
  
• Note: I will also point out areas in the text where you might want to work on syntax to improve the readability, logic, and flow of your text.  However, I will not do substantial rewriting; this is in the province of “substantive editing” (described below).
  
• Rate for copyediting = $70 per 1000 words. See payment options.

Substantive editing:  What I will check for you . . .

• Everything that I do as a copyeditor (above), Plus:
  
• Parallel construction (eg, of topic phrases within sentences, of sentences within paragraphs).
  
• Overall document consistency (eg, consistency of material presented in “Abstract,” “Results,” and “Conclusions” sections).
  
• Accuracy of subject-specific abbreviations and acronyms.
  
• I will also polish text (eg, delete, rearrange, and/or rephrase text) to improve the readability, logic, and flow of your text.
  
• Note: In some cases, I may also suggest changes in overall organization (whether text belongs in “Results” or “Discussion” section) and/or point out apparent gaps in information.
